The Melodic Blue is Baby Keem’s attempt to balance his individuality with a reduced dose of his trademarked chaotic energy, something he tries to harness on the project. That body of work promotes screaming and mosh-pitting your anger out as opposed to healthier and less-fun habits like meditation or therapy. It’s a sharp contrast compared to his 2019 breakout project, Die For My B*tch - an erratic and chaotic release inspired by a failed relationship.
Comprised of 16 songs with help from stars like Kendrick Lamar, Don Toliver, and Travis Scott, the Vegas rapper dulls the loud colors and sonics just enough to deliver his version of a mellow atmosphere without sounding monotone or robotic.
That’s something that Baby Keem’s major-label debut album The Melodic Blue understands.
With that being said, while the openness to all that is “weird” is clear nowadays, there are also limits to how funky, unique, and unorthodox things can get. Kid Cudi, who Keem has cited as an inspiration on multiple occasions, Young Thug, Travis Scott, Playboi Carti, and many more, are clear-cut examples. Abiding by them for too long hinders the chance for evolution and change as a whole to occur. “Rules” were broken, torn up, and disregarded, and rightfully so. Keem is part of a generation of hip-hop that prides itself on going against the grain. Many of today’s rappers are, and this often triggering adjective for some is not meant to be disrespectful to the 20-year-old Vegas rapper or any of his contemporaries. The turning point of the night came with Kanye West’s “Praise God,” which begins with audio of his late mother reciting an excerpt from a poem: “Even if you are not ready for the day, it cannot always be night.” As the song started, a red, robot-like laser pierced through the air, and the crowd erupted at Travis Scott’s opening verse.Baby Keem is weird, but that’s not a bad thing at all. The song, one of two ultra-popular hits featuring Lamar, electrified fans, who rapped along with Keem’s lyrics and Lamar’s adlibs later in the song. Many in the crowd had already been reciting songs word for word, but by the time “Range Brothers” came on, it seemed like everyone was singing along. His early songs, like “Hooligan,” “Pink Panties” and the throwback “Moshpit,” kicked off with some more lo-fi special effects, but they were merely a taste of the spectacle to come. Keem started the show with bursts of strobe lights, a video wall and smoke that covered the stage, which illuminated his silhouette to the point where he was just a black outline rapping against a backdrop of white light at times. Luckily, unlike the Tuesday concert in Detroit, the floor didn’t buckle and the show went on without many hiccups. After a brief break, Keem burst in with “Trademark USA,” the fierce opening song on “The Melodic Blue,” and got everyone jumping. Keem sold out the multi-level, 3,000-person venue, and although opening acts Scott Bridgeway and labelmate Tanna Leone hyped up the crowd on this cold and snowy Sunday night, impatient chants for Keem began the minute they’d left the stage.
